KL Rahul's Record-Breaking Opportunity
New Delhi [India] - On May 17, Delhi Capitals' experienced wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul is on the verge of surpassing a significant milestone in T20 cricket. He is just 33 runs away from breaking the record held by batting legend Virat Kohli for the fastest Indian to reach 8000 runs in T20 matches.
Rahul has the chance to achieve this remarkable feat during a crucial match against the Gujarat Titans at their home ground this Sunday. If he succeeds, he will accomplish this in only 214 T20 innings, outpacing Kohli's previous record of 243 innings.
Additionally, he could become the second-fastest player in T20 history, overtaking Pakistan's Babar Azam, who reached the milestone in 218 innings.
However, the Gujarat Titans may pose a challenge for Rahul, particularly with their star spinner Rashid Khan. Historically, Rahul has struggled against Khan, scoring only 40 runs off 47 balls and losing his wicket three times.
In contrast, Delhi Capitals' captain Axar Patel has been a formidable opponent against spin bowling this season, boasting an impressive strike rate of 192.85. Among players who have scored at least 100 runs against spin, only Nicholas Pooran from the West Indies has a higher strike rate (264) than Patel.
As the match approaches, Delhi Capitals will look to exploit the inexperience of the Gujarat Titans' middle order. The top three batters for GT—Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler—average 88 balls per innings, while the remaining batters from positions four to eleven have only faced an average of 28 balls per innings. This disparity in experience could work to Delhi's advantage at the high-scoring Arun Jaitley Stadium.
